I was going to give a full review on Avatar: The Last Airbender after seeing the series finale yesterday, but I didn't see it. Instead I went to see The Dark Knight...again...That's right, I would rather pay to see a film a second time then to watch the finale of one of my favorite show for free. And you know what, I will probably see it again. That's how good The Dark Knight is.
I'm starting to hear complaints about the hype it's getting, but I don't know, maybe I'm looking too deep or something because I think it's one of the best films I've ever seen, and I'm pretty well versed in film.
OPENING:
In Hollywood, if there isn't an explosion in an action film within the first 15 minutes, it's a flop. No loitering. Right to business. And more interesting than pretty. Success.
PLOT:
What I like about the take on the plot is that it's not about Batman saving a city; it's about a city saving itself. Harvey Dent seems to upstage Batman, but that's the point! It just makes it that much more tragic when he falls. Most of the plot points were taken straight from the comic, just woven together to make it more cohesive. And yes, it is pretty propagandic, but that's what the origional old school comics were. America needed a good cop, so we got Dick Tracy. America needed an icon, so we got Superman. America needed someone to battle terroists, so we got Batman. These all came out around the Depression era and WWII. And this is the first COMICmovie I've seen that keeps the spirit of the origional alive without being corny.
ACTING:
You already know what I'm going to say so I'll save that for last. The worst actor in this whole film was Christian Bale, and he wasn't even that bad. He's probably the best Bruce Wayne...but hands down the WORST Batman. If he lost the "scary voice" it wouldn't be so bad. But everyone else was perfect. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent: perfect! Micheal Caine as Alfred: perfect! Gary Oldman as Lt Gordon: perfect! Why was everyone in this film so dang good?!
I'm missing one aren't I? Hmmmm...now who could it be? Let me tell you a little something about my opinion of Heath Ledger. He was probably the best Petruchio ever. And that's how I've always thought of him. He wasn't ever one of my favorite actors, and when he died I just sorta said "Wow, really?" and moved on. I'm not a Hollywood freak, and not to be disrespectful, but I really didn't care. So here is my unbiased opinion: Give him the Oscar. Have his wife come up and accept it. I don't think anyone will complain. I know, I'm just as confused as you are right now. But holy crap, I've never been afraid of clowns before now. It wasn't just how he delivered lines. It was how he walked, gestured, his facial expressions, everything. How could I not know this man was such a good actor? When did this happen?
SOUNDTRACK:
Typical epic, superhero soundtrack. It wasn't bad, but we've heard it all before. I did really like when ever there was a moment of "dramatic screaming" it was drowned out by a high pitch whine. I hate dramatic screaming. It's corny. This worked.
ENDING: (SPOILERISH)
I'm going to be bold. If you didn't get the ending, you're an idiot. Okay, it did get a little campy with the monologue. But just the whole deal of Batman taking the fall for Dent so the city wont lose hope was a good way to end it. If it didn't happen, everything in the plot would have been undone, so it had to happen. Success.
OVERALL:
I will watch it again. I will buy the special edition DVD. I am drawing Batman fanart. My inner child is doing a dance. Good movie. Worth the overpriced movie ticket. See it.
